casebolt and smith was commissioned to develop "...in space" for seven dancers at LA Valley College. The process of this piece began through the teaching of contemporary movement, short bits of information that were taught and manipulated with directives on how to manipulate the choreogaphy. We played with texture, rhythm, repetition, responsiveness, desire, accumulation, sensitivity -all tools to coach the dancers into becoming stronger performers and more articulate beings. We worked on group listening, noticing and responding exercises to build a community. Eventually we played with timing of who goes and when. The choreography is illustrated through a complex network of cues that the dancers are responsible for triggering and initiating. The music, while rhythmical, does not have a pulse. The dance's success relys on the dancers' ability to watch each other.
